The Map is not the Territory
The Map is not the Territory is a Mental Models that explains how maps, or any abstraction of a reality, do not fully represent the reality. They are simplifications, and we should treat them as such. System diagrams, used in Systems Thinking are great examples of this mental model. System diagrams cannot and will not represent reality in full. When thinking about maps, we should make sure we have the right level of abstraction for the use of the map. If the level of abstraction is wrong, the map won’t be useful. The fact that the map does not represent reality links to the mental model Tendency to Minimise Energy Output, beacuse we don’t energy to represent systems in full.
